Veterans Day’s History
President Woodrow Wilson made the first Veterans Day declaration on November 11, 1919, a year after the end of World War I. It was formerly known as Armistice Day. Armistice Day was established to commemorate the courage and valour of the Great War’s fallen comrades. In 1926, Congress passed a motion urging that President Calvin Coolidge release yearly proclamations on November 11 to recognise Armistice Day as a statutory holiday.
Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, recommended in 1945 that Armistice Day be broadened to include all soldiers, not only those who died in World War I. He was the chairman of a committee that presented the concept to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was excited about it. Weeks went on to organise Alabama’s inaugural Veterans Day event in 1945, and he did it every year until his death in 1985. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan presented him with the Presidential Citizenship Medal. Weeks was also dubbed the “Father of Veterans Day” by Elizabeth Dole.
In 1954, United States Representative Ed Rees of Emporia, Kansas, introduced legislation in Congress to establish the holiday. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Kansas native, signed legislation on May 26, 1954, eight and a half years after Raymond Weeks organised the first Veterans Day. At the behest of veterans’ service organisations, the 83rd United States Congress changed the Act of 1938 by deleting the phrase ‘Armistice’ and substituting it with the word ‘Veterans,’ after witnessing both World War II and the Korean War. After this legislation was signed on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to memorialise American soldiers from all wars.
In 1954, Congressman Rees earned the very first National Veterans Award for his work in creating Veterans Day an official holiday. The day was shifted to the fourth Monday of October in 1971 due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, even though the holiday is presently and was originally observed on November 11. Eventually, on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford approved legislation that, effective in 1978, moved Veterans Day back to its former date of November 11.
If the event occurs on a Saturday, the federal government observes it on Friday; if it happens on a Sunday, the national government observes it on Monday. State and municipal government closures are decided on a local level, and non-government enterprises can shut or stay open on Veterans Day as they find appropriate, regardless of federal, state, or local government closures.
The period of November 11 to November 17, 2001, was recognized as National Veterans Awareness Week by United States Senate Resolution 143, which was adopted on August 4, 2001. The motion called for initiatives to educate pupils in primary and higher schools about veterans’ accomplishments and hardships.
How To Observe Veterans Day?
There are several ways to celebrate Veterans Day 2022. Some of them are discussed below:
- Employ a Veteran
Lack of training for civilian jobs, as well as inaccurate aspirations for the type of work and compensation they might anticipate when they return home, are all barriers to work for veterans. Many people leaving the service, on the other hand, may have commanded troops to war on multiple occasions, and as a result, they make excellent employees and managers.
- Fundraise for the Veterans
You can do fundraising events this Veterans Day like having a sponsored run for an organisation. They specialise in fundraising assistance so you may focus on running the race and generating as much money as possible for veterans.
- Offer goodies to Veterans
Saying thanks to veterans for their devotion by providing free goods on Veterans Day is a terrific way to show your appreciation.
- Give gifts with a military theme.
Most veterans value their period while defending their homeland, and one of the greatest ways to recognise their devotion is to give military-themed presents to the veterans in your life, such as wooden U.S. flags, or specially-designed pens.
Why Does Veterans Day 2022 Matter?
Veterans Day 2022 is an amazing opportunity to express your concern and love towards Veterans. Here are some of the reasons you should celebrate Veterans Day:
- Expressing Gratitude to Veterans
It’s an opportunity to express gratitude to those who have put their lives on the line to protect the Country. Veterans to be appreciated for their duty and efforts by civilians.
- It brings focus to the difficulties that many Veterans face.
Veterans experience disproportionately high rates of homelessness, educational deficiencies, career difficulties, and often have to contend with terrible wounds. Post-traumatic stress disorder makes it difficult for individuals to rejoin society in many circumstances. By recognising these issues, we can all work together to ensure that veterans have the highest suitable chance to survive a healthy and productive life following their service.
- Veterans Day is an opportunity to consider the significance of peace.
While our military is frequently associated with conflict, most veterans will remind you that they put their lives in danger to protect our fundamental liberties and that harmony is far more important to them than war. Few people who have witnessed the true horrors of war want to rush into it, and Veterans Day reminds us all to consider the significance of peace in our everyday interactions and life.
