The Indian Army was first constituted on April 1, 1895. However, after India’s independence in 1949, the Army appointed its first chief of staff. On this momentous day, the Indian Army was ceremoniously turned over. Lieutenant General KM Cariappa received the baton from General Sir Francis Butcher.
Lt Gen Cariappa led the Indian Army in the fight against Pakistan on the western frontier in 1947. He was promoted to Field Marshal of India on January 14, 186, making him the second highest ranked commander in the Indian Army. Sam Manekshaw was the first officer to attain this highest rank, which he received in 1973.
