The Aes Sedai of his day declined to support him in his quest, preferring to focus their efforts on restoring the world they believed he would destroy in his Last Battle with the Dark One. Without them on his side, Lews Therin Telamon was only partially successful; he fought the Dark One in the Eye of the World and tied him with cuendillar seals, an almost indestructible mineral.
The Dark One corrupted saidin, the male half of the One Power, and therefore victory came at a price. From that day forward, anybody who held the One Power was condemned to become insane, as Lews Therin Telamon learned when he returned home and murdered everyone he loved.

Rand al’Thor was guided to the Eye of the World by Moiraine in the hopes that he could repeat the ritual and bind the Dark One. She hoped that the Last Battle would be postponed, bringing the cycle of history to a close, but she was exceedingly foolish.
Something tremendous was developing in the Two Rivers for a long time, and the Dark One’s agent Padan Fain had been watching the five ta’veren mature. He didn’t appear to believe Rand was the Dragon Reborn – it’s unclear which of the five tavern he thought was the most probable – but he understood confronting the Dragon too soon would not help him defeat him.
