Will Smith is reminiscing on one of his career “great events:”

“So, by the time the film comes out, you’ve probably made one or two other things, and your mind has moved on, so when the audience sees it. it’s almost like you’re seeing it for the first time, along with the audience, and I was completely and utterly blown away by what Ray [Green] was able to do so delicately with this film.”

King Richard has many abilities. While it is primarily a drama, there are moments of hilarity that hit you just as the tears start to flow again.

“You often hear the cliche, ‘Oh, I laughed, I wept,’ [but] it’s one of those rare films that genuinely spans a broad range of feeling and ideas,” he said. “I had a hidden thought that I would never produce something greater than The Pursuit of Happyness, and I never said it out loud, but I had a secret thought that I would never do anything better than The Pursuit of Happyness, and then I watched King Richard.”

While Smith confesses that being a movie star was previously his primary preoccupation, he has since turned his attention to producing and sharing tales about “the triumph of the human spirit.” “I want to tell stories that make me laugh, weep, and smile, and I want to tell stories about the victory of the human spirit and the ladies of the movement, and King Richard fit right in.”

Because of how much time we spend on set and these things, I never want to ask someone to do something they won’t be proud of for the rest of their lives,” Smith explained. “So, for me, that is where I’m at right now when I call and say, ‘Hey, come along on this adventure with me,’ I want it to be enjoyable.

Its game, set, and match. Will Smith, ladies, and gents go to the cinematic center court to remind us that he can act? This is King Richard of England. This actual story of the Williams sisters’ ascension to the top of the sports world begged to be adapted for the big screen. And this is a fantastic timepiece.

Richard, the sisters’ father, penned a 78-page plan outlining how they would get out of Compton and become tennis champions before they were even born. King Richard was a well-known figure in the tennis world. He was obnoxious, tenacious, bold, and unyielding, and he would never accept no for an answer.

Smith epitomizes all of those characteristics with a sparkle in his eye and a lot of heart, and he’s far from alone. Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton, who play Venus and Serena, respectively, are relative rookies who do an outstanding job. This is one of those Christmas films that truly live up to its billing as a film that the entire family will love. It’s fascinating, informative, energizing, and a lot of fun.
